# How long can data be retained in InsightAPM?

[Function Definition]  
The data retention configuration is used to set the duration for which data generated by the APM backend service is retained. By default, data is retained permanently.

[Application Scenario]  
When edge-end data is uploaded frequently, it can quickly fill up disk space and cause service unavailability. Based on the customer’s business scenario, if only recent data is of interest, a data retention policy can be configured to automatically clear old data from the database, thereby freeing up space.

Once the configuration is set, data will be cleared at the beginning of each month.
